I’ve had a lot of projects this quarantine, but the one that excited and intimidated me the most was hands down “GARDENING”. There always seemed to be too much required or too much to know until I stumbled across one video on YouTube that just seemed to make it look feasible. Daresay made it look easy.
Armed with a brand new look on life (OK a brand new look on gardening), I marched over to the shops and took the first step! It’s been a fun and steep learning curve since then but one that I am so excited about! So I really wanted to make a video showing you what I was able to create and everything I learned!
Vegetable Gardening For Beginner Tips
- Grow what you’re going to eat! This sounds so obvious but I STILL can’t tell you why I bought Lemon Verbena other than it was on sale at Waitrose
- Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed by all the information on gardening. You don’t need confuse yourself with growing zones, wind exposure or whip out a sun calculator (trust me I tried!) Chances are no one will be selling things that don’t grow well in your region.
- If you’re on a budget, shop around before you buy anything. I found that the prices of gardening things varied massively from place to place. With my local garden centre being the most expensive place to shop from. Other than my pots (which were a steal at £1.50 each) supermarkets and Homebase were much cheaper for seedlings, soil, fertilisers, and pesticides. Also you can save money by planting food scraps and using plastic bottles and jars as planters too.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help. I learned a lot from talking to the assistants in stores. And correct me if this is a generalisation, but is it fair to say that the gardening community is really friendly?
- Remember the only things you need to garden is soil, plants, something to grow them, a little bit of sun and TIME.
