As you know I started My Healthy Kick at the beginning of the year. As a self-proclaimed foodie and someone who enjoys cooking I’ve enjoyed reconnecting with healthy foods and learning more about what I’m putting in my body. A few years ago I switched to soy milk because I realised that my digestive system wasn’t coping with regular milk well (it would always leave me feeling bloated, gassy and with horrible cramps). But I’ve learned that soy milk contains plant compounds called phytoestrogens or isoflavones. These compounds resemble human estrogen and can block your normal estrogen and disrupt endocrine function, causing infertility and increasing your risk for breast cancer. However these same compounds are said to reduce other types of cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis and help relieve menopausal symptoms too.
Truth is the research is pretty contradictory and for someone that likes the occasional soy latte, this may not be a problem but for me I decided to introduce another non-dairy milk product into my diet because I drink A LOT of milk. I put it in my porridge or cereal (which I have every day), smoothies etc not to mention that soy is found in a lot of the foods we eat. So I’ve decided to transition to almond milk which luckily is very easy to make!
Dates (optional)
I got this brand for N2,500 from my local supermarket |
Soak your almonds in cool water – you want to have at least an inch of water above the almonds |
Soak the almonds over nigh (for at least 8 hours) then rinse them in cool water. You’ll notice that the almonds are now plump and engorged. |
Dates are an excellent natural way to sweeten your almond milk. I got this brand from Goodies in VI for about N600. Add a tablespoon to the blender along with the almonds and 3 cups of water |
Blend for 3 minutes – use the Pulse setting to break up the almonds then blend until you have a smooth frothy mix |
Here’s the jug and linen cloth I used |
Place the linen cloth in the jug as shown |
Pour the almond, date and water mixture into the jug. The linen cloth acts as a filter. You can speed up the process by using a spoon or your hands to squeeze the almond meal against the cloth |
Pour into an airtight container and store in the fridge. Your fresh almond milk should last you about 3 days |

I was planning on doing this when I move back to Nigeria permanently. I started drinking almond milk last year when I found out that soy milk produced estrogen which could be hindering my weight loss efforts. Regular milk has a lot of sugar which I don't need. The issue now is; how will I spend N2,500 every 3 days for milk??!! That's N10,000 in 2 weeks for milk alone. I'm thinking I'll source out where I can buy almonds the cheapest, or go straight to a wholesale company, or add more water to my almonds. When I get home, I'm looking forward to overcoming this hurdle! I MUST HAVE MY ALMOND MILK!
