Hi guys,
I’m really trying to stay on top of these resolutions I set in Hello TwentyFourteen *pats self on the back* The book I read in January was Rivers of London by Ben Aaronvitch. I came across this book on Tanya Burr’s YouTube channel – the second she said it was similar to Harry Potter I quickly snapped it up.
Without giving too much away this book is about a policeman called Peter Grant who works for London’s Metropolitan Police Service. He’s a bit of an underachiever and an extremely relate-able and funny character. One night he’s at a murder scene where he finds out he can communicate with ghosts and this makes him the prodigy of Inspector Nightingale who is the last wizard in England. Inspector Nightingale goes on to train Peter how to be a wizard and he goes on to deal with vampires, the god and goddess of the River Thames, ends up digging up graves etc all to solve the supernatural crimes that happen in London.
I enjoyed reading this book for the most part but as it went on it started to get a bit tiresome for me. I guess I’ve grown out of the whole wizardry thing because I found myself just trying to get through it. The best think about the book is Peter, he’s really funny and I liked all the descriptions of London (helped feed my nostalgia a little) but all in all I would have to give this book 3 STARS and I won’t be bothering to finish reading the other books in the series.
FYI, I read all my books on my Ipad with the Kindle app. Its the easiest way to get books from Nigeria in my opinion. Every single book you can think of is available on the Kindle store. They’ve got a huge selection of free books and if you want to pay for them you can use your Nigerian debit card. I always preferred reading hard copies but now that I’m used to it I think I’ll be reading e-books for now. I don’t have to worry about storing books and I can read in the dark so if you have any sort of tablet device I’d recommend giving the Kindle app a try.
Next month’s read will be 12 Years A Slave, please leave any book recommendations below!
