I did it!!!!
If you know me you know I’ve been itching to do this for about 2 months now. I’ve been talking about it for what seems like forever. I watched hundreds of videos on Youtube and looked at thousands of before and after pictures. It got to a point where I was so bored of thinking about it and going back and forth that I just decided to do it! So at 11.00pm last night, I sat down at my vanity, wet my hair and started snipping.

Loving it |
I decided to invent a little Big Chop (BC) tag with some of the questions I thought people would have about my BC.
How long did you transition for?
Exactly 6 months. My last relaxer was on May 10th 2012.
Why did you decide to BC?
I couldn’t think of a good reason why I was waiting anymore. I wore wigs and weaves during my transition so even if I hated it, I could just go back to that! I wanted to see my growth. Its hard to explain but I feel like you can’t really tell what your natural hair is like while you’re transitioning and I just wanted to see it. The idea of tracking my hair growth with pictures as my fro grows out was so exciting to me. And I’ve never had short hair. It was time to switch it up.
How did you do your BC?
I did it myself. I wet my hair with a spray bottle so I could clearly see where my curls ended and snipped using hair shears. My sister helped me too. The whole process took about 30 minutes. When I was done, I washed my hair, and put it in two-strand twists using Eco Styler gel and some Giovanni leave in. I still have some relaxed ends but I can get to those later. I think we did a pretty good job.
What was my initial reaction to my BC?
Cutting the back section was easy but ish got real when I started cutting the front! The first thing I said was “Oh my God I look like a boy!” But (this is so cheesy) I was happy. I knew I’d made the right decision. I was so excited to be 100% natural! I even did a little dance.
What were other people’s reaction to my BC?
The first person to see it other than myself was obviously my sister. She loved it and said it was really cute on me. Then I sent pictures to my friend Yasmin who I’ve been transitioning with- she loved it too and was so proud of me that I actually did it because she’s got the most of my “To BC or not to BC” talk. The funny part was the next day. I walked around my house passing 3 people and no one noticed– not even my mom! After I pointed it out to her she felt my hair and said “Oh wow. That’s so brave.” And then she went on to mutter something along the lines of “not getting what I’m doing” *rolling my eyes* LOL!
Everyone’s hair journey is different and I don’t expect chopping your hair off to be for everyone. But if you’re thinking about it and have been putting it off because you’re scared – please just do it! Leave your questions and comments below. And if you’ve done the BC/thinking about doing it please answer the questions to my BC tag!

I love your courage. I am transitioning currently..I'm going to be 5 months by 9th of august. But the thing is …I'm also tired of waiting..I need to see curls only…I can't wait to BC in another 3 months.
Ifeyinwa says
Hi Nafisat! Thanks for your comment but it was more my incredible impatience rather than courage that made me cut all my hair off lol – the waiting part was the absolute WORST part for me but by now you're only 2 months away from your goal – you can do it! Good luck x
